Stanhope is a small market town in County Durham. It is built alongside the River Wear. The area was originally well known as a coal mining centre.
Stanhope originally had a Norman Castle but that was abandoned and it wasn't until 1798 that the present castle was built by Cuthbert Rippon, a London solicitor. In later years it became a site for an approved school but then was sold and sub divided into apartments.
