Alnwick Castle, Northumberland
The fame of this castle in modern day movies is almost as great as its real-life fame in English history! Referred to by many people, especially visitors from the United States as "Hogwarts Castle", Alnwick Castle is perhaps best known for its use as a filming location for the Harry Potter movie series. Year upon year there is a constant stream of visitors from around the world who come to see this fabulous Northumberland castle.
Before the Harry Potter series it was featured in Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves (Kevin Costner) and in the title credits of the very first BBC series of Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson).
Construction of the castle began in the late 11th Century not long after the Norman Conquest of England and today is the second largest inhabited castle in England (after Windsor Castle - home to HM Queen Elizabeth II).
