Hexham - Hadrian's Wall Region

Hexham, Northumberland Hexham lies at the heart of an area known worldwide for having the best remaining sections of Hadrian's Wall, the largest World Heritage Site in the whole of England. The opening of The Hadrian's Wall National Trail in recent years has created a significant surge in visitors to the area, making Hexham a key place for tourists.

A market town, still relatively unspoilt by modern day life, Hexham has an interesting history. Until the days of Elizabeth I, Hexham and its surrounding district enjoyed an individual county status - Hexamshire. Hexham Abbey in the centre of the town dates back to the 14th century and has an original Saxon crypt. For the benefit of visitors there's also the Border History Museum plus plenty of antique shops and good leisure facilities and for horse-racing fans Hexham even has its own racecourse.

Other places of interest within easy reach of Hadrian's Wall: Prudhoe - Housesteads - Vindolanda - Chesters - Birdoswald - Wylam - Cherryburn

Other towns and villages worth visiting are Allendale in its own Valley just to the south of Hexham. A little further south is Alston the highest market town in England. Heading north for the border along the A68 you will soon come to Otterburn and its battlefield.
