Lanercost - Hadrian's Wall Region
Lanercost is a tiny village nestling amongst the greenery of East Cumbria, approx 13 miles east of Carlisle. Close to the World Heritage site of Hadrian's Wall and the fort of Birdoswald it is also within easy reach of the roman forts of Vindolanda and Housesteads.
The real gem of Lanercost is perhaps not as well known but carries great historical significance - Lanercost Priory, a 12th century, medieval priory. Part of the priory is still used today for local church services and the monastic ruins are run by English Heritage.
In the 13th and 14th centuries Lanercost Priory featured heavily in the conflicts between English and Scottish armies - both William Wallace and Robert The Bruce attacked it and a dying King Edward I (Hammer of the Scots) stayed at the priory with his royal retinue for several months in 1306/7 during what turned out to be his last campaign and because he brought the seals of England with him, it technically meant that for that period at least, Lanercost was the capital of all England.
