Alnwick is
an historic market town whose most prominent and famous feature is
the majestic Alnwick Castle, home to the Dukes of Northumberland
and, in recent years, made world famous by its use in the Harry Potter
film series. Another landmark with movie connections is the
Swan Hotel whose main function/dining room is gloriously furnished with
fittings from the White Star Line's 'Olympic' ship,
sister ship to 'Titanic'. The light fittings, the wood panelling and
even the marble fireplace all came directly from the
'Olympic' after it was retired and sent to a nearby breakers' yard in
1935. Researchers for the James Cameron 'Titanic'
movie studied the fittings in detail as they were identical to those
installed on the 'Titanic' - eg. wood carvings were
carved in duplicate for the sister ships. Just standing in the room takes
one back to a different time, a different era. Alnwick also has a host
of craft shops, coffee houses and restaurants as well as a lively theatre
and hosts major events
throughout the calendar year such as the week long Alnwick Fair and
the Alnwick International Music Festival.
