Alwinton - Central Northumberland
Alwinton is a small picturesque village which lies in Upper Coquetdale in west central Northumberland, on the eastern edge of the Northumberland National Park. It is the gateway to the Cheviot Hills. It stands at the point where the River Alqin joins the River Coquet.
The valley continues past Alwinton for another 12 miles of single track road, passing farmsteads Barrow Mill, Linbriggs, Shillmoor, Bygate, Barrow Burn, Blind Burn, Fulhope, Makendon and finally the Roman encampment of Chew Green which is intersected by The Pennine Way. The walking is superb, you can still walk all day and hardly see a soul!
To the south of Alwinton is Thropton. From Thropton you can drive west to Elsdon and Otterburn, or east to Rothbury.
