Bamburgh is
world famous for its magnificent castle. Enjoying a coastal setting
second to none in the whole of the British Isles, the castle has a
1,000 year history to match. From the time of the Saxon kings to raids
by the Vikings
and right up to the first Norman seige, Bamburgh castle proved impregnable.
The Wars of the Roses, however, changed that
when the castle fell to artillery attack from Edward IV's guns and Henry
VI was defeated. Ownership of the castle has
passed through a variety of hands through the centuries, one notable
owner being the Reverand Dr John Sharpe who lived
there from 1738 unti 1792. Extensive restoration work on the great hall
was one of his major achievements along with
the creation of a boarding school for girls and a public library of many
thousands of works. He also made a significant
contribution to saving lives at sea in the local area, setting up measures
to aid vessels in distress and helping towards
the provision of a local lifeboat. Bamburgh castle is not only steeped
in history but also in mystery, for stories and
legends abound about things that have happened within its walls over
the centuries. Fact and fiction have become blurred
in these stories - such as that of the Pink Lady or the one about Green
Jane. There are others too, but suffice it to
say Bamburgh Castle is well worth a visit for anyone visiting the area.
