Holy Island - Northumberland Coast

Sometimes known as Lindisfarne this island can only be reached across a causeway passable only at low tide. Being a place of pilgrimage for over 1000 years it is known as The Cradle of Christianity. The Christian community was founded on the island by St Aidan in 635 and also became home to St Cuthbert who died on Inner Farne in 687.

St Cuthbert was buried on Holy Island, 11 years later his body was uncovered to reveal the corpse lay undecayed after all that time. Lindisfarne Mead a famous fortified wine is produced on the island. Made from local honey and water fermented with yeast it is regarded as “the nectar of the gods”. Mead maybe the oldest alcoholic drink in the world.

Other places of interest within easy reach of Holy Island include: Castles at Warkworth - Dunstanburgh
