Warkworth - Northumberland Coast

Church in WarkworthThis picturesque village standing in a loop of the River Coquet, about one mile from the Heritage Coastline is probably best known for the medieval castle which dominates the village.

An ancient narrow medieval bridge with 2 arches crosses the river. This 14th century bridge is now only for pedestrians. St Lawrence's Church is the only fairly complete Norman church in Northumberland. It has five Norman windows in the nave, a highly decorated chancel arch and vaulted chancel ceiling, and a rare 14th century stone spire.

Warkworth is near the mouth of the river Coquet, has a sandy beach only 1 mile away and fishing and boating in the river. You can travel by boat from Warkworth Castle (or follow a shady path) upstream to the Hermitage, a rock cut chapel with 2 living chambers built by a hermit.
