Central Northumberland Region
This region to the east of the Cheviot Hills stretches from the Scottish border to the River Tyne and contains some of the finest countryside in Northumberland with rolling hills, heather-clad moors, and sparkling rivers meandering through wooded valleys to the sea.
There are peaceful villages and bustling market towns such as Alnwick, Alnwick and Chillingham Castles, and the fine country houses of Wallington Hall and Cragside.
Close to the estate village of Etal, with its thatched cottages, is Heatherslaw narrow gauge railway and working corn mill whilst at nearby Chillingham is the famous herd of wild, white cattle, enclosed within the castle grounds during the 13th century. The major road of the region, the A697, runs from Morpeth to Coldstream and intersecting it are numerous virtually traffic free minor roads, which makes exploring the area both easy and pleasurable.
Other places of interest include Thropton, Alwinton, Wooler and Rothbury.
