Holiday Cottage Description

Once a stonemason's workshop, this delightful cottage lies adjacent to a grade II listed former bastle house on the edge of the ancient village of Elsdon, within the Northumberland National Park. The village is noted for its fortified Pele Tower and its church, built circa 1400 on the site where St Cuthbert's body rested in 875. High on the pillar near the door are some deep scratches, reputedly left by the bowmen of Redesdale sharpening their arrows. As recently as the early 19th century the pagan superstition of driving cattle through midsummer bonfires to protect them from disease was observed on the village green. Footpaths radiate out over the surrounding hills offering fine walking and views. Wallington Hall, Cragside, Hadrian's Wall and Kielder are nearby. Rothbury 10 miles. The coast 25 miles. Fishing, golf and horse riding available locally. Art workshops in drawing, painting, batik, screen print and felt making available at Townfoot Studio.
