Warkworth is a village in Northumberland which is best known for its well preserved medieval castle and church. Situated around 30 miles North of Newcastle and around a mile from the Northumberland coast, it makes an ideal visit for those interested in English Heritage.

Things to do in Warkworth

Warkworth provides a variety of English Heritage sites and also offers wonderful dog-friendly beach walks as well as interesting galleries and shops which stock souvenirs, antiques, high-end art and fashion. The area also offers a nine hole golf course that dates back to 1891.

To find out more about the history of Warkworth, you can visit the church of St Lawrence, a pinnacle which has stood for around 1200 years and features Norman architecture.

The village’s castle dominates the skyline around the area and is rich in history. It was once the home to the Percy Family and features as the setting of two scenes from William Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 2. Free audio tours are available.

The beach is a 10-15 minute walk from the village and offers views of Coquet Island and the North Alnmouth. The beach itself features in The Good Beach Guide and boasts some of the highest quality water of in the UK for bathing.  

If history or walking is not your thing, then Warkworth’s 9-hole links golf course offers a game with coastal views. However, the course is not for the fainthearted. Measuring only 5876 yards, it has a par of 70 which gives an indication of the challenges that lie in wait, so concentration and accuracy are key to playing this course.
