The historic market town of Alnwick is perhaps most well known for its magnificent castle and gardens. The Alnwick Castle is renowned for its role in the Harry Potter movies as ‘home of the Hogwarts’ and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. A visit to Alnwick Castle is a great day out for all the family with lots to explore both inside and outside with daily sessions of broomstick training on the very spot where Harry took his first flying lesson! Or, brave the dungeons if you dare, dress up as a knight, try wand-making, create a mosaic tile or have a turn in the town square stocks!
The Alnwick Garden is one of the world’s most contemporary gardens, offering visitors a day filled with adventure and fun. There are lots of lovely water features including a grand cascade and themed gardens including the rose garden, ornamental garden and the poison garden. Explore one of the world’s largest treehouses and try the Forgotten Garden Adventure Golf, great fun for all ages! Fine dining is available in the treehouse and there are a couple of lovely cafés in the gardens if you simply want a drink and a slice of cake!
The cobbled market town has a lovely selection of shops, café’s, restaurants and bars, all within easy walking distance from your holiday cottage. There is also The Playhouse Theatre, the Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre which has a large swimming pool and climbing wall, as well as Barter Books – home to the largest second-hand book shop in the country, situated in the old railway station at Alnwick. A place full of character and charm which welcomes locals and visitors alike including four legged ones!
