The tidal mudflats and salt marshes of the bay provide an abundant food supply for the birds, some of which travel thousands of miles to breed before departing to their winter homes making this an ideal base for bird watchers. Holy Island, which can only be reached at low tide by the causeway is a short drive. Bamburgh Castle, beach and village are about 2 miles to the south by road or a little further by a coastal footpath. This quaint village offers pubs, restaurants, museum and local shops.
