Bamburgh & Holy Island Area Holiday Cottages
Bamburgh is a picturesque coastal village situated on the north Northumberland coast and provides the perfect base for a self-catering holiday in Northumberland. With a great variety of holiday cottages in Bamburgh, we are sure you will find the perfect place to stay.
Bamburgh has so much to offers its visitors, with many of its attractions within easy reach of your holiday cottage. One of the most striking features of this popular village, is the castle which covers an impressive 9 acres of land and overlooks the village and the cricket green below it. Due to the castle’s high rocky perch, views of Bamburgh Castle can be enjoyed for miles around.
There is an expansive sandy beach at Bamburgh, with Seahouses at the South end (with some excellent rock pooling opportunities) and Budle Bay to the north end, an important bird sanctuary popular with birdwatchers. For golf enthusiasts, there is a golf course in the village offering fantastic views of the Northumberland coast and Bamburgh castle. Have fun on the beach spotting the World War Two tank defences which have been painted as colourful dominoes and slightly further to the north next to Bamburgh lighthouse, you will see a white stag painted on the side of Blackrocks Point!
Looking across the coastline from the beach, you will find the Farne Islands and also the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, while also being in the shadow of the castle which sits behind sandy dunes. Bamburgh beach is also very popular for water sports activities (voted one of the North East’s top surf spots), horse-riding, sandcastle fun and of course it’s also great for dog walking!
The Grace Darling RNLI Museum is well worth a visit, dedicated to the famous local heroine, Grace Darling. This modern and interactive museum contains the original coble boat that was used during the rescue and showcases lots of interesting artefacts owned by the Darling family. Across the road from the museum, you can visit St. Aidan’s church, which dates back to 635 and visit the prominent stone memorial dedicated to Grace Darling.
The village, has a lovely traditional style tea room, The Copper Kettle where you can enjoy a bite to eat or a relaxing afternoon tea treat in front of an open fire. Discover the many wonderful shops, delis, pubs and restaurants in the village. Looking for inspiration for what to cook for the family during your holiday? We would recommend you try R. Carter and Son’s Butchers, who arguably produce Northumberland’s finest sausage ‘The Bamburgh Banger’, perfect after a day exploring the Northumberland coast and enjoying a tasty meal in the comfort of your Bamburgh holiday cottage.
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is just a short drive from your Bamburgh and can be reached by crossing a causeway onto the island (do make sure you check safe crossing times when planning your day out as this remote island is cut off twice a day by high tides). This tidal island, is one of Northumberland’s most loved treasures, renowned for its origins of English Christianity and the Lindisfarne gospels. Enjoy a walk around this magical island and take time to enjoy the magnificent coastal views from all around this island. Head back into the centre and visit the Lindisfarne Gift Shop and St. Aidan’s Winery for a taste of the popular Lindisfarne Mead, before heading back to relax in the warm comfort of your holiday cottage!
