Description

This renovated farmhouse nestles among the heather on the foot of the Cheviot and is surrounded by beautiful, totally unspoilt scenery and an abundance of wildlife.  The peace and tranquillity of the College Valley is unsurpassed.  Visitors can walk out in every direction and spend a day in the hills with the knowledge that every comfort awaits their return, as the cottage is very well appointed and equipped.  This is truly an idyllic hideaway, accessed by a private single-track road, the nearest habitation being out of sight some distance away.

The College Valley is a special place, a gentle hidden gem in today’s busy world, once seen never forgotten; ten cars are able to buy permits to use the private road system each day so traffic is unlikely to be a problem.  The cottages sit on the foot of the Cheviot Massif in the National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.  At night the only light is from the stars and moon.  Northumberland National Park Authority, Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust and Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society were awarded the title of Northumberland Dark Sky Park in December 2013, making Northumberland, Europe's largest Dark Sky Park.  There are wild goats, deer, peregrine, red grouse, ring ouzel, buzzards, ravens, kestrels and many others. 

If you are quiet you may be lucky enough to see one of the most charming residents, the red squirrel.  This is a perfect spot for all the countryside has to offer; walking, fishing, golfing, riding, cycling, bird-watching, historic houses, gardens, churches and castles or for driving the short distance to the coast where there are beautiful beaches, Holy Island and trips to the Farne Islands.  Wooler is 11 miles, the village is friendly and offers a wide range of shops selling locally produced meat, bread and vegetables.  There are several good pubs and restaurants in the area, nearest bar/restaurant 8 miles.  Wooler is host to the Glendale Show, held on Bank Holiday Monday at the end of August.  This agricultural show is popular with both locals and holidaymakers; it celebrates many aspects of rural and farming life, and provides a fun day out for all ages. 

College Valley is a private estate, there are four letting houses, an independent hostel and a Community Hall with a marquee site that is licensed for weddings and other functions.  It is possible to book the whole Valley for events.  The Heritage coast is just 20 miles.  Grouse shooting and stalking by arrangement.  If you would like to bring your horse with you, it can be arranged or take a ride from nearby Kimmerston Riding Centre across the sands to Holy Island.  Bike Hire available nearby.  Although there is no television reception within the College Valley, DVD’s can be watched on the televisions provided in the cottages.  All the properties let all year and are available to start your holiday on any day of the week, the only specification being a minimum letting of three nights.  Due to the remoteness of some of the houses it is occasionally impossible to get safe access in deep snow, in this case a refund will be given or an alternative date offered.
