Hadrian’s Wall is a designated World Heritage Site stretching almost 80 miles coast to coast and is one of the world’s most famous landmarks, popular with visitors all year round.
This is an area of outstanding natural beauty and many of our Hadrian’s Wall cottages enjoy fantastic views over rolling countryside and dramatic highlands in this wonderful region. Spend time exploring the Roman forts of Birdoswald, Housesteads and Vindolanda dotted along the Wall. Plan your stops before setting off as there are also lots of welcoming pubs and tearooms to visit for a bite to eat while enjoying a rest and a chat to the friendly locals.
Staying in a holiday cottage in the attractive riverside market town of Hexham, provides not only a great base for touring the local countryside, local villages and market towns such as Corbridge and of course walks along the ‘wall’, but also the historic market town itself has lots to offer visitors.
Located on the south bank of the River Tyne, this market town is steeped in history. Visit the Hexham Old Gaol, the oldest prison in England which is now a museum which takes you back in time and explores crime and punishment in medieval Northumberland. Hexham Abbey is also a ‘must see’ while staying in Hexham. Originally a monastery dating back to the 7th Century, the original crypt still survives but the current abbey that exists today, dates from the 11th century onward and is well worth a visit. Stroll around the beautiful park by the riverside at Hexham and wander the cobbled streets, exploring the towns boutique shops, cafés and pubs. There is also a swimming pool, Falconry Days visitor attraction, and an 18-hole golf course, something for everyone come rain or shine!
Just south of Hadrian’s Wall is the small market town of Brampton in Cumbria, the Talkin Tarn Country Park is easily reached from here where you can enjoy a stroll and a picnic around the lake or try one of the many water sports on offer. Just 9 miles to the west and you will find the Great Border City of Carlisle with has lots to offer explorers looking for a great day out. With a mediaeval castle, cathedral, award winning Tullie House Museum, excellent shopping and leisure facilities; you will not be short of places to visit during your time here.
A self-catering holiday in Hadrian’s Wall Country, puts you in a great central location for also exploring the wonderful surrounding areas of the Lake District, North Pennines, Eden Valley, Northumberland, Solway Firth and the Scottish Borders.
