It is the second largest AONB and is also home to the highest waterfall in the country – High Force.
The 12th century Hexham Abbey, which has been a place of Christian worship since AD 674, takes an impressive centre stage in the middle of this historic town, along with a Hexham Gaol – built in the 12th century, it is the oldest purpose-built prison in England and the 14th century Moot Hall.
Clustered around the Abbey are some lovely coffee shops, a cinema, leisure centre, great range of high street and independent shops, galleries, restaurants, pubs and even a theatre, tenpin bowling alley, racecourse and golf course – something for everyone come rain or shine! In the evening, there is also lots to enjoy - with live music, theatre shows and movies in several venues across the town.
