Rothbury & Coquetdale Holiday Cottages

Rothbury is a bustling market town in the heart of Northumberland. Built on a sandstone hillside it is surrounded by stunning countryside with heather clad moorland and the River Coquet flowing through the centre. Known as the ‘Capital of the Coquetdale’, this town is well known for its popular events that are hosted throughout the year including a popular music festival, street fair and food and craft festival.

Staying in a holiday cottage in Rothbury, you are located on the edge of the Northumberland National Park and will find yourself ideally situated for days out exploring the stunning Simonside Hills, Cheviot Hills, the National Trust’s Cragside House, Gardens and Estate and enjoying scenic riverside walks and trails.

Rothbury has an excellent range of shops that run the length of its High Street, including a grocery store, outdoor clothing shops, shoe shop, tea rooms, newsagent, award-winning butchers, art galleries and a good variety of pubs and restaurants.

The area also offers excellent opportunities for fishing in the River Coquet and also at nearby Fontburn Reservoir. There is a lovely 18-hole golf course in Rothbury which is within easy walking distance of the village. Families will enjoy spending time on the riverside by the main footbridge where there is a fun children’s play area, this is also a perfect spot for picnics and paddling in the river during the warm summer months.

Perhaps the most visited attraction in Rothbury is Cragside House, the former home of Victorian inventor Lord Armstrong which is now owned by the National Trust. It was the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity. Once Inside, you can immerse yourself in the ingenious gadgets he created and step back in time by exploring the rooms of this grand Victorian home.

Surrounding Cragside, there are over 1000 acres of estate to discover. From rocky paths, woodlands and formal gardens - you may need or day or two to fully appreciate the wonders of Cragside. Take a walk across the magnificent Iron Bridge, (the first of its kind in the country), where you get magnificent views of the house, see the recently installed Archimedes Screw which has restored hydroelectricity to Cragside (as featured on The Robson Green’s Tales from Northumberland series), walk around Nelly’s Moss lake and in the summer months you can even canoe on the main Tumbleton Lake in front of the house. Children will love the play area, the trim trail and the labyrinth!
